Why did Republicans decide their racially divisive "Southern Strategy" was "wrong" only AFTER...?

According to the strategy's description by YOUR source, it was not racially divisive. It was POLITICALLY divisive - blaming Northern Democrats (ALL of whom STILL DEMAND separate legal cles based on race) for Southern "unrest."
