Help me answer my mini/compact fridge question?

I had to chip away at the ice in my mini fridge(one for college) because i was in a rush to get it somewhere and didnt have time for it to thaw out.While i was doing that i chipped a hole/crack some on the freezer coil part thing at the top (the steel ) part and it started to leak some air stuff out.All i know is that i punctured the steel part no wires are broke.i duck taped it up and its working was just wondering what the air was that was coming out and is it safe to keep the way i have it?
