How much does the director's skill affect the quality of a movie?

I'm asking this question because ( I'm a huge Terminator fan) I'm worried on how good Terminator salvation will be. Its being directed by McG, guy I never heard until now. I just hope Terminator salvation doesn't suck and mess up the series. T3 did enough damage on sucking up the Terminator series.
